Description

The community fund “Hamburger Spielräume” supports non-profit organizations and public institutions in Hamburg in implementing extracurricular projects for children and young people. Funding is provided for initiatives that offer young people—especially from disadvantaged neighborhoods—spaces for play, social interaction, and shared experiences. The goal is to strengthen participation, self-efficacy, and positive impulses at a time when psychological stress, social insecurities, and financial challenges complicate the life circumstances of young people. With funds of up to €3,500 per project, the fund enables leisure activities, excursions, creative and nature experiences, as well as short trips with overnight stays, all designed to be open and participatory. Educational concepts featuring democratic participation and a clear focus on disadvantaged participants increase the chances of success in the application evaluation.

In three application rounds in 2026, funding applications can be submitted starting February 3, June 16, and September 29—each for project periods between February 24 and December 31. Eligible to apply are associations and providers of extracurricular child, youth, and family work, neighborhood cultural centers, as well as environmental education organizations based in Hamburg with non-profit status. Eligible costs include fees, personnel costs, material and travel expenses, as well as catering; projects in a school context are excluded. An online application form, tax exemption certificate, and proof of funds are among the required documents. Selection is made within 15 working days based on participatory approaches, the ratio of funding amount to project scope, and the concrete contribution to the participation of young people. Since 2020, this low-threshold procedure has been used to implement demand-oriented projects, supporting around 920 initiatives with over €2 million in funding.
