Description

The Flood Protection Program of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection as well as Regions and Water Management supports public institutions, interest groups, and associations in implementing protective measures on Austrian water bodies (excluding the Danube, Morava, and Thaya). With an annual budget of approximately 115 million euros, it continuously funds projects aimed at protecting residential and economic areas from flooding. Priority is given to projects in high-risk areas such as historic town centers, significant transport and infrastructure facilities, or particularly valuable cultural assets. Funding is provided in the form of direct grants, with disbursement of funds carried out through the respective state governments.

The focus is on minimizing interventions in water bodies and their surrounding areas while simultaneously preserving or improving the ecological status of the waters. Sustainable concepts are to be implemented that, in addition to structural protective measures, also include renaturation efforts and aim for good ecological potential. Eligible applicants are primarily municipalities and municipal associations based in Austria that are committed to improved flood risk management. The goal is to protect the population, infrastructure, and sensitive habitats in the long term from the consequences of extreme flood events while maintaining the natural character of the water bodies.
