Max – Artists in Residence at Schools

Max – Artists in Residence at Schools promotes the sustainable integration of aesthetic education in Berlin schools through three-year studio residencies. Artists from various disciplines establish their studios directly within an educational institution and, in continuous exchange with teachers and students, create an open learning space. Over a period of 36 months, artistic encounters arise in which everyday school life and artistic practice merge. The program is implemented as a sponsorship by the Brandenburg Gate Foundation and has been providing impulses for cultural school development since 2015 by making aesthetic processes accessible free from performance pressure and fostering creative research approaches.

Eligible for funding are private artists as well as public institutions that wish to enter into a long-term partnership with the Brandenburg Gate Foundation. Participating schools have the opportunity to arrange studio visits, follow creative processes, and present the results in project exhibitions at the end of the school year. Teachers and students benefit from new methods of experimental learning and from direct engagement with contemporary art. Applications can be submitted at any time, as the program continuously accepts submissions. It is aimed at all those who wish to strengthen cultural education, promote democratic values, and bring new perspectives into the school context through artistic practice.
