Description
The nationwide funding initiative "Natural Climate Protection in Municipalities (Grant No. 444)" supports public authorities in implementing ecological projects for CO₂ sequestration and climate-resilient design of urban and landscape areas. Cities, municipalities, and municipal companies receive grants for nature-based infrastructure measures that enhance biodiversity and sustainably improve urban green spaces. Eligible applicants are public institutions from all federal states, with project proposals accepted on a rolling basis without a fixed deadline. The funding program focuses on nature-based climate protection measures aimed at both improving the climate protection balance and adapting to climatic changes in settlement areas.
Supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and administered by KfW Banking Group, the funding targets municipal actors seeking to advance ecological transformation. Measures such as the rewetting of wetlands, green belt projects, or the expansion of urban tree and hedge stocks are eligible for funding. With a clearly defined content framework and the provision of technical information sheets, transparent implementation is ensured. Public institutions benefit from a long-term sustainable impact in their settlement areas while simultaneously making an active contribution to the national climate protection strategy.
