Description

As part of the research projects of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research, doctoral scholarships are awarded that specifically support doctoral candidates in the social and societal sciences. The scholarship includes a monthly basic amount of €1,400 and additionally grants subsidies for health insurance, child and housing allowances, as well as the coverage of project-related material and travel expenses. For early-career researchers with children, the child allowance amounts to €400 per month for the first child, plus €100 for each additional child. A housing allowance of up to €200 per month supports rental costs in Hamburg, while individually tailored budgets cover travel expenses and literature acquisitions. The scholarship holders also receive workspaces and access to the comprehensive research infrastructure of the institute, with regular on-site presence expected.

All doctoral candidates enrolled at a university and participating in an HIS research project are eligible for funding. The support covers 100% of the costs for living expenses, insurance, and project-related expenditures. To apply, a detailed project description, a current CV, the enrollment certificate, and a confirmation from the project leadership must be submitted. Calls for applications with respective deadlines are published on the HIS website under “Current Calls.” The Hamburg Institute for Social Research Foundation thus enables targeted support for early-career researchers in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg and promotes innovative research projects in the social and societal sciences.
