Description
The Charité Foundation supports the long-term recruitment of outstanding life scientists and university clinicians for Berlin through the Recruiting Grants. The focus is on the targeted strengthening of existing or emerging research priorities at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Funding is provided for researchers at career level R3 (e.g., junior group leaders, junior professors, assistant professors) and R4 with above-average qualifications and performance. In addition to scientific excellence, particular emphasis is placed on promoting diversity with regard to gender, origin, internationality, and age. Applications can be submitted continuously by members of the Charité board – possibly together with co-applicants from other involved institutions – and must be submitted early to demonstrate the financial and substantive indispensability of the funding contribution. Selection is based on clearly defined criteria such as third-party funding acquisition (“Money Follows Researcher” principle), contribution to the profiling of a research focus, and the long-term development potential of the grantee.
The grant can amount to up to €750,000 over a maximum of 36 months and covers four critical success components: appropriate remuneration of the recruiting grantee, dual career measures for partners, additional equipment (scientific staff, consumables, investments), as well as travel expenses for the preparation of appointment procedures. Administrative costs and overhead flat rates are not funded. For the application, in addition to the Charité Foundation application form, a program description, a financial plan, proof of acquired third-party funding, and a presentation of the strategic significance of the desired talent are required. The decision lies with the Foundation Board, supported by external experts. Travel expenses can be approved in advance without conditions, while the disbursement of the main funds is linked to the successful completion of the recruitment.
