Description

In Bavaria, the State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection supports public institutions in the renovation of existing drinking water extraction and treatment facilities as well as wastewater facilities in hardship cases. The aim of the grants is to protect municipalities from unreasonable financial burdens and to restore a standard service life of 25 to 50 years. Funding is provided for structural renovations, expansions, and retrofits as well as new constructions of treatment plants, stormwater overflows, and retention basins. The subsidy is granted as a fixed-amount grant of €250 per connected inhabitant, up to a maximum of 70% of eligible expenses, once within the four-year funding period. A cap of €3 million per project ensures that larger projects are reliably supported.

Eligible for funding are cities and municipalities whose per capita burden exceeds the hardship threshold according to the RZWas 2025 guidelines and whose measures have not yet commenced. Applications can be submitted continuously to the regionally responsible Water Management Office. Required documents include Form 1a according to Art. 44 BayHO and planning documents in accordance with REWas (as of 05/2022). After review and issuance of the decision, the funds are available flexibly for disbursement. Municipal decision-makers and planning professionals can obtain further information on the procedural process and detailed requirements from the Water Management Offices to implement projects promptly and in compliance with legal requirements.
