The Consul Karl and Dr. Gabriele Sandmann Foundation supports highly gifted and socially disadvantaged children from Berlin in all phases of their university and doctoral studies with monthly, non-repayable grants. Eligible to apply are students, doctoral candidates, as well as individuals with concrete study intentions who were either born and raised in Berlin or have lived continuously in the capital for at least eight years prior to the start of funding. The aim of the support is to enable recipients to fully focus on their academic performance by eliminating financial worries about living expenses. Scholarships are generally awarded for the standard period of study or for doctoral projects for two years, with the option of a six-month extension in exceptional cases.
For a complete application, evidence of above-average academic or examination achievements, a detailed application letter, and a curriculum vitae must be submitted. A supporting statement from a university or academic supervisor is also required. Selection is based on the criteria of excellent academic achievements, proven social need, and the fulfillment of the statutory funding purpose. Applications must be submitted annually to the foundation between July 1 and September 15.
