Description

The Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation supports nationwide one- to two-week physics schools that focus on cutting-edge, often still textbook-free research fields. These events offer advanced students, doctoral candidates, and postdocs the opportunity to engage in intensive academic exchange within an interdisciplinary environment with recognized experts. Typically, 50 to 80 participants attend the physics schools, which last at least five days. The funding recipients are non-profit educational institutions or private individuals, with substantial involvement of the German scientific community being a prerequisite. The foundation grants subsidies for accommodation costs of the scientific directors and lecturers, travel subsidies for the speakers, as well as financial resources for poster prizes, while lecture fees and travel expenses of the participants are not funded.

Funding applications can be submitted twice a year, in spring and autumn. Those responsible for the application are scientists (students, doctoral candidates, or postdocs) who present a young research field with a didactically high-quality concept. The application dossier includes the title of the physics school, venue, date and duration, short CVs of the scientific leadership, a detailed program draft, as well as a justification with scientific background and a cost breakdown. Evaluation criteria particularly include the continuity and quality of the speakers, the innovativeness of the topic, the proportion of female speakers and participants, and the involvement of the German scientific community. Interested applicants can find further guidelines and deadline information on the foundation’s website.
