Mission & Vision

"Remembering requires understanding": The Baumgart Foundation for Contemporary History is committed to an in-depth scholarly engagement with those involved in the system of National Socialist concentration camps. Aware that the disappearance of the generation of eyewitnesses creates a growing gap in the culture of remembrance, it promotes research, education, and democracy. It involves descendants of perpetrators in the examination of their family history and makes research findings publicly accessible to strengthen responsibility, tolerance, and democratic values.

Target groups

The funding programs of the Baumgart Foundation are aimed at: scholars, individual researchers, and academic institutions planning projects on research into Nazi perpetrators, the history of concentration camps, and family biographies during National Socialism; as well as descendants of members of the Nazi concentration camp system who wish to work on their family legacies (photographs, documents, narratives) and seek confidential exchange or academic support.
