Description

In North Rhine-Westphalia, educational institutions in Essen are given the opportunity, with the support of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, to organize multi-day study trips to Berlin. Funding is provided for school groups from grades 8 to 13 within the Essen city area; each institution may participate with one group. The aim is to convey German-Jewish history, strengthen civil courage, and promote political education through visits to central memorial sites such as the Jewish Museum Berlin. The funding covers 100% of expenses up to 10,000 euros per group. Eligible costs include travel to and from the destination, accommodation (maximum of three nights), meals including visits to restaurants, as well as entrance fees for museums and memorials; cash payments and debt repayment are not eligible. More than ten applications will be selected by lottery.

Interested school groups may submit their documents for the fourth round starting in autumn 2026. Required are a letter of motivation from the participants, a photo documentation addressing Berthold Beitz, information on group size and grade levels, as well as consent declarations from the supervising teacher and the school administration. Travel and accommodation arrangements are the responsibility of the schools themselves. The project period is the 2026/2027 school year, with the exact travel date being flexibly selectable. Through this grant program, the Foundation makes a sustainable contribution to democratic education, promotes social cohesion, and invites young people to engage competently and reflectively with their own history.
