Description

The funding program "Investments in Bicycle Traffic Infrastructure (Bicycle Traffic Infrastructure Funding Guideline – RadFörderRL)" is aimed at municipal authorities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania who wish to invest in the construction, modernization, and expansion of bicycle paths as well as accompanying facilities. The goal is to establish a safe and seamlessly planned bicycle traffic system that facilitates daily mobility and supports the modal shift from motor vehicles to bicycles. The program funds the new construction and reconstruction of roadside bicycle paths, independent bicycle paths, bicycle streets, protective lanes, as well as the construction of bicycle path bridges or underpasses. Both structural measures and the necessary planning and consulting services by independent experts are supported.

Funding is provided primarily for investments that contribute to a sustainable and traffic-safe bicycle infrastructure. In addition to the expansion of bicycle paths, the program also includes measures that optimize stationary traffic, such as the establishment of bicycle parking garages and facilities. Other eligible expenses include renovation and upgrading measures of existing bicycle paths, safety improvements through appropriate signage and lighting, as well as operational measures to optimize traffic flow, for example through the coordination of traffic signals and separate traffic light phases. Grants generally cover up to 75% of eligible expenses; for financially weaker municipalities, up to 90% may be covered. This ensures that smaller communities also benefit from a high-quality bicycle traffic infrastructure and thus meet the demands of both commuter and everyday traffic.

The application procedure is formalized and requires the submission of a comprehensive application, which includes, among other things, a detailed project description, proof of financing, as well as all necessary permits and approvals. Interested municipalities, offices, districts, and municipal associations submit their documents electronically to the State Funding Institute Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (LFI M-V). The funds granted under the program are earmarked and generally bound for 15 years, which contributes to the long-term stability and sustainability of the investments. Overall, this funding makes a significant contribution to improving bicycle infrastructure, promoting climate-friendly mobility, and enhancing traffic safety in both urban and rural regions of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
