Description

The initiative of the Foundation for People and the Environment promotes the creation of nature-oriented mini-parks in Berlin residential neighborhoods, transforming vacant areas of 300–500 m² into blooming oases for people and wildlife. Under the expert guidance of the natural garden team, diverse structures are created from native flowering plants, deadwood, dry stone walls, and water features, providing both refuge for insects and birds as well as attractive meeting places. Through participatory planting activities and informational signage, residents’ connection to the neighborhood grows, while ecological aspects such as biodiversity promotion and climate adaptation are effectively implemented. Award-winning pilot projects in Reinickendorf, Köpenick, and Mitte demonstrate the concept’s effectiveness in the urban environment.

Funding is provided to housing cooperatives, housing companies, and other residential facility operators interested in sustainable neighborhood greening. Requirements include the provision of a suitable open space, willingness to cooperate with the foundation, and a brief letter of intent including a site plan. Grants cover consulting, planning, materials, and implementation services by garden and landscape construction, while ongoing operating costs are not eligible for funding. Evaluation criteria include area size, site quality, resident involvement, and sustainability aspects. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, offering the opportunity to ecologically enhance urban green spaces and sustainably strengthen social cohesion within the neighborhood.
